Coca Cola build Birds Nest for Olympics

Coca Cola makes the connection between the world’s most famous drink and the Beijing Olympics in “Birds Nest”, a television commercial released in time for the 2008 Olympics.

The advertisement, developed at Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, features animated creatures, black, yellow, blue, red and green, on a quest to collect drinking straws from various parts of the world. Their paths converge in Beijing, where they have constructed a red and white birds nest of their own. The closing words: “Live Olympic on the Coke Side of Life”.

The Birds Nest ad was developed at Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam by executive creative director John Norman and Al Moseley, art director Pierre Janneau, copywriter Dave Smith, agency executive producer Corey Bartha, agency producers Neil Henry, Elissa Singstock, Cimien Ekici, Julie Crosbie, Miranda Johnstone.

Filming was shot by directors Thomas Hillard and Eric Lerner via Partizan with director of photography Stephen Keith-Roach, producer Isabella Parish, executive producer Russell Curtis, and project manager Emma Williamson.

Eric was invited to work with W+K for Coca-Cola after they saw his short film Mr City Men (see my later post). The five birds in the film represent the five Olympic rings and their colours. The shoot took Eric and the team halfway around the world, to Argentina, Africa and China and then spent three months in post in house at Partizan Lab, London.
