Symphony in Red for Konzerthaus Dortmund

Konzerthaus Dortmund, Dortmund Philharmonic Concert Hall, promoted its 2006/07 season with Symphony in Red, a study in typography in swirling movements of red liquid. A white room is transformed by what appears to be swirls of blood, forming the names of artists, responding to the music and developing abstract interpretations of mood.

Artists are named: German virtuoso violinist Anne Sophie Mutter, Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel, French violinist Renaud Capuçon, Turkish/German pianist Fazil Say, French conductor Marc Minkowski, Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, Bulgarian opera singer Vesselina Kasarova, English violinist Nigel Kennedy, Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, Romanian composer György Ligeti, New York based Emerson String Quartet, Austrian Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna), Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra, French cellist Yo-Yo-Ma, Chinese pianist Yundi Li.

Symphony in Red was developed at Jung von Matt, Hamburg, by executive creative director Wolf Heumann, creative directors/art directors Sascha Hanke, Timm Hanebeck, copywriter Michael Okun and Moritz Grub, account managers Nina Gerwing, Lena Frers, agency producers Alexander Schillinsky and Hermann Krug.

Filming and animation were directed by Niko Tziopanos via Sehsucht GmbH with cinematographers Bea Wellenbrock, Alex Heyer, Valentin Heun, producers Andreas Coutsoumbelis, Martin Woelke, animators Alex Heyer and Martin Hess.

Music, Kara Toprak (Black Earth), was provided by composer and pianist Fazil Say.

Symphony in Red has won silver (for animation) and gold (for graphic design) at the International ANDY Awards, 2008.
