Barr Soft Drinks has launched the first Christmas-focused television campaign for the Scottish soft drink, IRN BRU. The 60 second animation, “Phenomenal Christmas’, plays with Raymond Brigg’s original story, “The Snowman”.
The IRN BRU Snowman clip begins with the boy decorating the snowman in his back yard. As the boy takes a swig from his can of IRN BRU the snowman turns around, grabs his hand and leaps into the air. Together they fly over Scotland, looking at the Falkirk Wheel, the Forth Bridge, Glasgow’s Buchanan St, the Princes St Gardens Ice Rink, the Loch Ness monster, a red deer, the Glenfinnan viaduct, Eilean Donan Castle, and Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. When the boy refuses to share his IRN BRU with the snowman he’s dropped off in George Square in Glasgow. The snowman flies off drinking the IRN BRU, discarding his carrot nose. George Square is lit up with the tagline, “Have a Phenomenal Christmas”. The ad finishes with a link to itsphenomenal.co.uk Click on the image below to play the video.
Walking in the Air
As in the original Snowman film dialogue is replaced by a simple song sung by Ben Robinson, choirboy at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh.
We’re walking in the air
I’m sipping on an IRN-BRU
My chilly snowman mate said
that he would like some too
I tell him, get your own
He looks like he is going to cry
I tell him once again that the IRN-BRU is mine
Now I’m falling through the air
I wonder where I’m going to land
He nicked my IRN-BRU and let go of my hand.
Allan Brown At Large in the Times Online writes on the background to the IRN BRU Snowman ad. Craig Brown, writing for The Scotsman, writes about protests from health campaigners concerned that the IRN BRU Snowman campaign will attract young children to the drink. Leith respond by saying that the ad is being slotted for evening programs and is aimed at a teenage/young adult audience.

Original Lyrics for “I’m Walking In The Air”
We’re walking in the air
We’re floating in the moonlit sky
The people far below are sleeping as we fly
I’m holding very tight
I’m riding in the midnight blue
I’m finding I can fly so high above with you
Far across the world
The villages go by like dreams
The rivers and the hills
The forests and the streams
Children gaze open mouth
Taken by surprise
Nobody down below believes their eyes
We’re surfing in the air
We’re swimming in the frozen sky
We’re drifting over icy
Mountain floating by
Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep
Arousing of a mighty monster from its sleep
We’re walking in the air
We’re floating in the midnight sky
And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly
The Snowman by Raymond Briggs
Raymond Briggs published “The Snowman” in 1978. Filming for the 1982 film, “The Snowman” was directed by Dianne Jackson for Channel 4’s TVC. The soundtrack was written by Howard Blake.
The song on the original film was sung by Peter Auty, senior chorister with St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Aled Jones sang the song on the re-released version. David Bowie provided a narrative in the re-released version.
Rights to The Snowman are held by Snowman Enterprises.
