The largest free standing hall in the world, situated in Brand, 60 km south of Berlin, Germany, is a late twentieth century airship hangar converted into a full enclosed tropical islands environment, Tropical Islands.
The dome was originally built in 1997 by Cargolifter as a hangar to house a large freight zeppelin. When the company went bankrupt a Malaysian entrepreneur, Colin Au, bought the hangar to convert it into a tropical paradise. Working with Au was Berlin architecture firm CL MAP and engineering firm Form TL.
The building is 360 metres long, 210 metres wide, and 107 metres high, made of steel. The original PVC membrane has been replaced by transparent EFTE foil that is permeable to UV light.
Inside the dome up to 7000 holiday makers at a time can enjoy tropical rainforest, exotic restaurants, a tropical sea with beach, a lagoon, authentically designed and constructed buildings from Bali, Borneo, Thailand and Samoa, tent accommodation, and a waterslide.
